Small scale minimum tillage wheat - part 4, harvesting
Переглядів 5684 роки тому
Picking wheat by hand on a hot August 26th. An enjoyable, social activity in the fresh air. Each person can pick around 1.2 kg ears per hour, which is around 1.0 kg grain. The total harvest should be around 50 kg, which is just over 8 times the weight of seed sown. I'll update these figures when we do the threshing.
Small-scale minimum tillage wheat, part 3 - surviving a gale

Unseasonably high winds hit the farm on 10th August with 39 mph winds. But the wheat withstands the gale, even though it is up to 5 ft tall.
Small-scale, minimum till organic wheat: Part 2, growing
Переглядів 1,5 тис.5 років тому
3 months later on 16th July. So far so good. Buzzing with insects and littered with wild flora, which are all welcome. This video also compares my crop with a neighbouring conventional crop. The differences are stark. Note that although I estimate that my yield will be 3 times less than the conventional crop, I understand that other organic farmers have much higher yields than me, up to 80% of ...
Small-scale, minimum tillage, organic wheat. Part 1: sowing
Переглядів 2,2 тис.5 років тому
I have been growing cereals on a small-scale for 12 years, including different varieties of wheat for self-sufficient bread-making. Previously I ploughed but for the last 4 years I followed this "min-till" method, taught to me by Friedrich Wenz, a biodynamic farmer from Germany. In 2017 yield of "April" wheat was 2.1 tonnes per hectare, reduced due to lodging and therefore rot. In 2018 yield wa...

How to make a tripod haycock
Переглядів 3,8 тис.9 років тому
Haycocks were always used in northern Europe up until the coming of mechanisation and weather forecasts, and still are in some places. They are temporary field stores whose purpose is to protect hay against rain until it can be permanently stacked or baled. In a modern small-scale setting they enable hay-making to be done progressively over a period of weeks which is ideal for making hay either...
Vidhata small stationary thresher and two-wheel tractor part 2

This 5HP 400kg threshing machine was shipped by sea from India to UK at a reasonable price. The makers are Basant products of Agra, India. It can have its own electric motor but I decided to drive it from my Pasquali 10.5 HP two-wheel tractor which required a new pto shaft linkage. The straw is chopped up into chaff for feed or fertiliser as is the norm in India. I do not mind this because norm...

ploughing 2 wheel tractor march 2.mp4
Переглядів 29 тис.13 років тому
Ploughing with a two-wheel tractor, early March 2011, Sussex, UK. The soil is a sand/clay loam. The field had recently been my pig-patch for several months so the soil was fairly well dug-over in parts. The plough was able to get down to at least 6-7 inches in the well-dug parts but only 3-4 inches in virgin turf. Equipment: Pasquali XB40 tractor (Yanmar 10.5 horsepower, diesel engine); 52 cm d...

Could we soap get the Daleks to play this jingle when they Exterminate!! the horse and leave it to decomposing like 140 beached pilot whales?! If everyone has a horse you need about 900kgs to feed it over winter. Save the whales please.

As the price of hay continues to rise, I've decided to save & use every blade of grass I cut this year. Drying & putting up hay loose or if I can find the blue prints for this box , I'll be hand baling my hay.

Never read it but I suspect not. In those days they stacked hay in ricks outdoors, thatched with straw against the rain.

This is what you call an artisanal hay bail. Extremely low carbon intensive operation. Very cool. Cute but impossible to replicate. I grew up farming in Snowville UT on 1,285 acres. The whole valley 20 families farmed and ranched is now all owned by Berkshire Hathaway.

Good job! What's your preferred method of threshing? I cut my small scale plots with a sickle, but also right below the head, so that most of the stalk stays upright. For threshing I will pour the heads into a large rain barrel. Then a paint mixer with attached chains will do the threshing, so that I end up with a mix of seed and chaff. Afterwards it's time to winnow and et voila we got our heritage grain seeds ready for milling.

    • @SmithPLovatt
      @SmithPLovatt 3 роки тому

That sounds like a great and cheap method of threshing . I was not so inventive and imported a PTO driven stationary machine 5HP from Basant Industries India. It works very well but is very expensive for such a small amount. I have advertised it hoping to share it with other small scale growers but found only one so far.

I have a BCS two-wheel tractor with a 13hp gas engine. Your Pasquali looks much stronger. Those metal wheels are impressive too! I was pretty sure that was a diesel. The "knock" of it is very noticeable in this vid.
